BEAUMONT DE LOMAGNE

Don't miss visiting Beaumont de Lomagne and two of the most remarkable monuments of Lomagne: the church of Notre Dame de l'Assomption and the "halle" (the covered market), both from the XIIIth century.

The church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption started being built in 1280 in a French southern gothic style.  The exterior of this church gives a fortress appearance.  Visitors are amazed by the vast interior.  In 1580 this church was attacked by the Protestants.  The interior perspective is cut by a baldachin dating from 1705 which has an “Italian taste”; it displays several ornaments made of stucco with the representation of the Assumption of Virgin.  The bell tower was built between 1390 and 1480 and it’s one of the most beautiful examples of a Toulouse bell tower inspired by the style of Saint-Sernin.

The “Halle” (covered market) was built in the 14th century in the heart of the bastide.  It is a square of 40 x 30 metres and consists of a hood of wooden pillars supporting a roof with tiles rebuilt in 1857.  Classified as a historic monument in 1930, it represents together with the 17th and 18th covered passages, a very important artistic treasure

LAVIT

The village of Lavit used to be in the Middle Ages the main commercial centre of the area as it was located in a very ancient crossroads.

This village was already rich in the Gallo-Roman period.  In the 12th century the Viscounts of Lomagne used to live here and they commanded the building of the castle, one of the 4 most important castles of Lomagne.  It was demolished during the French Revolution.  The town hall would be located in its place in 1840.

The ancient Halle made of wood was replaced by an Eiffel style metallic hall in 1894.  At that time this fact was quite revolutionary, but now this halle is completely integrated in the village and is the real witness of a historic period.

Saint-Jacques parish church was rebuilt in 1515 with very big dimensions but with very bad materials, so today is the half of the 16th building remains.

SERIGNAC

Sérignac is a very beautiful village with a unique facade: a "door" made of bricks, dating from the XVIth or XVIIth century.  The central street is flanked by typical vernacular houses.

The church is consecrated to the martyr saints of Milan, Gervasio and Protasio.  It was under the jurisdiction of Moissac abbey in 1240.  It was destroyed in 1561 during the Religious wars.  In 1772 it was rebuilt at the same place, at the end of the principal street.  It was destroyed again in 1949, the 31st July, by a terrible fire: only the bell tower remained.  The church was finally rebuilt in 1950, situated as always to the South door of the village and surrounded by half-timbered houses.
