LARRAZET
Larrazet is the first bastide of Lomagne, created between 1253-1254 by Belleperche abbey. The Charter was signed in 1265.
It was first built as a “Castelnau” and in the 14th century the building of the ramparts modified extensively the structure of the first town. There’s no central market place, characteristic typical of the town in this area.
Built on a regular plan, one can see covered passages with typical houses (16th – 19th centuries) at the roadside.
The single lordship of Belleperche didn’t last for a long time. In 1283 it passed to the Viscount of Terride, who renewed (and perhaps modified) the Land Charter in 1292.
The most prestigious era of Larrazet was the 15th century, when Jean III de Cardailhac, the Abbot of Belleperche from 1485 to 1543, ordered the construction of the castle and the church.
The church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine was built in the Gothic style between 1500 and 1530. During the Religious wars, in 1561, it lost its portal and some chapels. The building was restored in 1607 by the Belleperche abbey. It has just a nave with five spans, no capitals and lateral chapels. Its only ornament is the magnificent altarpiece made of stucco in 1687 and consecrated by Nicolas Berthier, the Abbot of Belleperche.
The castle dominates Gimone valley and it was built in 1500 over the ruines of a XIIth century castle.
