History of Puygaillard
The name derives from the Occitan terms “pech” (hill) and «galhard” (high).
Puygaillard de Lomagne was the fief of the Léaumont family in the 14th century. Gaillard de Léaumont payed homage to the Count of Armagnac for these lands in 1331, then they passed to the Munau family by marriage in the 17th century, and to the Olivier and the Beauquesne families in the 18th century.
The principal resource of these lands was undoubtedly based on agriculture, but still in the first 19th century several potters were listed.
