History of Poupas
The name derives from the Occitan term “popa” (breast, nipple).
Early settlement is indicated by some archaeologic remains dating from the very first part of the middle ages in the place called “Aurios”. In «Tabus» place some pieces of ordinary pottery have been found.
The parish church was built probably in the 15th century. The castle was the property of the Counts of Lomagne in 1306; today only some ruins remain. The present castle was built in the 17th century, probably by order of the Arbieu familiy.
