History

The name derives from the Latin term «mons» (mountain) and from the Occitan term «galhard» (high).

During the second half of 12th century, the Lords of Montgaillard made some donations to the Abbey of Granselve.  The first lord known is Rubens de Montgaillard; his family seemed to be quite important in the territory; we know that Rubens assisted in 1164 Raymond V, the Count of Toulouse, in a donation ceremony.

The Percin family acquired the lordship in the 16th century.  Some documents concerning Bernard de Percin de Montgaillard, called “Le Petit Feuillant”, have been found; he was born in Gascogne in 1563 and he became famous for his predicaments and for his important role played in Protestant Ligue’s affaires.

The castle was burnt on by order of Richelieu in the 17th century, and the church has been rebuilt in the 19th century.

Montgaillard was the second most important pottery centre of Lomagne for 4 centuries.
