The name derives from the Latin term “malum” and from the Gascon term “becco” (fortress).
Maubec is an ancient “oppidum” located in a very strategic place. It was a strongly fortified Catholic town used as a refuge by populations suffering Huguenots persecutions. In the late 14th century, during the Wars of Religion, Maubec affirmed its military role.
In 1590 its inhabitants couldn’t resist the Mauvezin Protestants attacks; these Protestans succeeded in opening a breach in the back church wall. It was the beginning of the sacking of Maubec and of the massacre of its population. The church was completely destroyed, but Maubec survivors persisted in restoring it during the following years. Only the original bell tower foundations remain from the very first building.
After these violent centuries, Maubec became a very active rural centre, still important in the beginning of the 20th century.
