The name derives from the Occitan term «arasar» (to level), or maybe from the word Arras.
Belleperche Abbey was created in 1130-1140 by the Argombat family, until it was sold to the clerical order of Clairvaux in 1143. Then the abbey was transfered 9 Kms from its original location. From this location the friars controlled a very important lordship known as «Arras».
The Land Charter dates from 1265. The 23rd May 1253 the Abbot of Belleperche and the Bishop of Toulouse signed an agreement stipulating the sharing of taxes and the creation of different chapel areas and maybe the lands limits setting… This would mean that Larrazet was born as the first bastide of Belleperche in 1253-1254.
Jean III de Cardailhac, Abbot de Belleperche, ordered in the 16th century the building of a beautiful residence where friars used to find refuge when the monastery was in danger. This abbot ordered also the building of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine Gothic church in 1500-1530 over the location of a 13th century sanctuary. This church was sacked during the Wars of Religion and was restored in 1607.
