History of Glatens

The name derives from the German name "Grato" or "Glatto".

Glatens is a place-name that indicates a Merovingian manor.  The saint's name of Saint-Martin (parish patron saint) indicates the presence of a sanctuary dating from the time of Christians establishments in Lomagne.

The name of Glatens is recorded in a document of 1175.  As it was one of the highest point of the Gimone valley, a medieval tower was built in the North of the church.  In 1394 Arnaud Capel, lord of the «tower of Glatens» payed homage to the counto of Armagnac.

The church suffered the consequences of the Wars of Religion and was restored in 1676.  It has conserved an inscription in memory of Saint-Clair, a crucifixion tapestry and a statue of the saint.
