History of Gimat
The origin of the name is unknown.
Gimat was the capital of the Gimadois, a country including the lands of Gimat, Esparsac, Gensac, Cumont, Lamothe-Cumont, Marmont and Sahuguet. Each land used to have its own lord, the baron of Gimat being the Suzerain. The first owners of Gimat lands were the Viscounts of Lomagne and they remained in the hands of this family until the 15th century, when the Lorsdship was acquired by the Durfort family.
At the end of 15th century the presence of Jean Pothon de Xaintrailles (Jeanne d’Arc’s companion) is reported. The Land Charter was signed before 1351.
In the early 16th century the
churches of Gimat and Esparsac made up a unique parish depending on the Cumont priory. The church was destroyed during the Religious wars and it was rebuilt during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.
