History of Gensac

The name derives from the Gallic place-name “Gentius”.

Until the mid 14th century these lands remained in the possession of the Gensac family.  From 1350 to 1440 the Grossolles family is styled “Lords of Gensac”, but in 1430 this family had to sell a part of the lands to Bertrand de Lupé.  This family acquired the totality of the lordship some years later.  From the mid 16th century until the Revolution this Lordship was the property of La Roche-Fontenille family thanks to the marriage of Anne de Lupé to  Antoine de la Roche-Fontenille.

The village, created in 1790, used to belong to Saint-Nicolas de la Grave canton in 1801; since 1913 it belongs to Lavit canton.
