History of Esparsac
The name derives from the German name of «Spartius», or maybe from «eaux éparses» (scattered waters).
In the late 15th century the castle was settled on the South-west side, near the main village door; the houses were settled in the rest of the area. The village was surrounded by walls and wide ditches. In April 1476 the King Louis XI wrote a letter authorizing the lord of Esparsac to rebuild the castle. This lordship had belonged for a longtime to the Barons of Gimat, until it became a parish capital during the 16th century.
The 15th century church was settled behind the walls; it has been restored during the centuries; two chapels date from the 17th, and another one from the 19th century.
