History of Cumont
The name derives from the Latin term "mons" (hill) and from the pre-Gallic term “kuk” (round height).
The first fact known of Cumont history is a donation of Saint Cirice church made by its lay owners to Moissac Abbey in August 1082. A 13th century Papal bull confirmed the link of this abbey with Cumont church, created in 1245.
The lordship belonged to the Cumont family until 1350, then to the Galard family (15th) and to the Montesquiou-Xaintraille family (from 1570). During the 17th century it belonged to the Lucmajour family. The Bacalan family sold it to François de Pagès, Count of Beaufort, in 1754. The lands remained in the hands of this family until the beginning of 20th century. In 1908 Auguste Bernard Cassaigneau bought the castle.
The Land Charter was written in Occitan and it was ratified in 1394 and in 1539.
